An alpha blocker to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) in men, which include difficulty urinating, painful urination, and urinary frequency and urgency. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the bladder neck and prostate, and the smooth muscles around arteries and veins to allow urine to flow more easily. Some alpha blockers worsen erectile dysfunction (ED), but alfuzosin usually does not interact with drugs such as sildenafil (Viagra). (Indications of alpha-blockers) • benign prostatic hyperplasia • hypertension Off-label: • bladder outlet obstruction • ureteral stones, to facilitate kidney stone expulsion (Other examples of alpha-blockers) • terazosin • doxazosin • tamsulosin • silodosin (Side effects of alpha blockers) • dizziness • hypotension • retrograde ejaculation • malaise • amblyopia, blurred vision • nasal congestion, nasal bleeding • arthralgia, myalgia • anorexia, dry mouth • nausea, vomiting • constipation, diarrhea
