I consider myself to be an ordinary man or indeed a typical man. To prove this point, it was my wife that urged me to have my annual health check once Covid restrictions began to lift. As I headed out to my GP my wife called after me “make sure she takes all your bloods”; I got a phone call a week later stating that my PSA level was high and another blood test was needed but it was looking like I was starting out on quite a journey. Gerry is a sexagenarian. He is retired gentleman who has two adult daughters and four grandchildren. He married his present wife in 1980. Regular health-checks eventually revealed that his PSA count was a concern. Further exploration identified the presence of cancer in his prostate. His chosen solution was a Robotic Prostatectomy. Following encouragement from friends and professionals he later documented his entire prostate cancer journey and published his account in a book entitled Prostate Piddling and Passion. This venture has led him towards men’s health advocacy. He is adamant that much more awareness is needed about prostate cancer side effects and access to products which make possible, a great social life and good mental health. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
